The Serengeti National Park is a Tanzanian National Park in the Serengeti ecosystem in Mara Region. The park covers 14,763 km2 of grassland plains and savannah as well as riverine forest and woodlands. It is the second largest park in Tanzania.

The park lies in the north of Tanzania, bordered to the north by the Kenyan border, where it is continuous with the Maasai Mara National Reserve. To the southeast of the park is Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

Wildlife

The park is well known for hosting the ‘Big Five’. It also supports many other species including cheetah, Thomson’s and Grant’s gazelle, topi, eland, waterbuck, hyena, baboon, African wild dog and giraffe among many others. The park also boasts about 500 bird species, including ostrich, secretary bird, Kori bustard, crowned crane, marabou stork, martial eagle, love birds and many species of vultures.

With more than 2 million wildebeest, 500,000 Thomson’s gazelle and 250,000 zebra, it has the greatest concentration of plains game in Africa.

Climatic Conditions

With altitudes ranging from 920 – 1830 mm average, temperature varies from 15o – 26o C. The coldest temperatures are experienced from June to October.

Major Attractions

It is famous for its annual migration of over 1.5 million white bearded wildebeest and 250,000 zebra and for its numerous Nile crocodile found in the Grumeti River.

It is also the best-known wildlife sanctuary in the world, unequalled for its natural beauty and scientific value.

Location

It is located 335 km from Arusha, stretching north to Kenya and bordering Lake Victoria to the west.

Getting there

  • By Road: Road transfers to the park.
  • By Air: Light aircraft transfers from Arusha to the Seronera Airstrip or Kirawira Airstrip.

Best time to visit

Between December-July to see the wildebeest migration and between June-October to see the predators.
